Seborrhea is quite common. It is a skin problem that causes red itchy rash and white scales to appear. Sometimes this is called seborrheic dermatitis. It may be confused with dandruff. However, dandruff is generally milder and consists of a flaky build up of cells. Seborrhea is unpredictable and can flare up at any time. There are some triggers though. The change in season can often cause the scalp to dry out and start an outbreak. It most commonly seen in people that have an oily scalp or excess grease on the scalp. The term is used for people as well as pets.

What Causes Seborrhea?

Stress is another common trigger. Hormonal changes in both men and women can also cause a seborrhea. Certain medications can also cause the scalp to become a breakout to occur. No one really knows the exact cause of seborrhea, but it may be due to a buildup of yeast. When the sebum gland produces too much oil, or sebum, yeast can grow. When bacteria is present the problem is worsened. When the scalp becomes inflamed hair follicles and scalp pores close up trapping bacteria inside. This in turns causes scalp rashes, scalp redness and scalp itching. It usually occurs on the scalp, but may also appear on the chest, face, or ears. Seborrhea is believed to be hereditary and people with certain diseases, such as Aids or Parkinsonís disease are more susceptible to outbreaks.

Many people try to use drying or clarifying shampoos or conditioners to dry up the scalp oils. Many times this actually makes seborrhea worse. This problem cannot be cured by moisturizer or other chemical heavy products. Instead the sebum gland needs to be regulated to create the optimal amount of oil. Seborrhea is not curable but it can be controlled to where your scalp is symptom-less. Zinc is especially helpful in helping regulate the sebum gland and balance the PH level of the scalp. A well balanced scalp is a healthy scalp and will result in healthy hair.
